Whereabouts – How you might find a wi-fi hotspot?

By on December 24, 2012

Increasingly, wireless hotspots (also referred to as ‘wi-fi hotspots’) are popping up across the UK. There’s much talk of using your smartphoneSpend Less on Your High Tech Smartphone. Here’s a quick guide to the types of places you can expect to find wireless hotspots and what you might utilise them for…

Stadiums

Many stadiums and sporting grounds throughout Britain boast hotspots; meaning you can connect via your BlackBerry, iPhone or whatever mobile device you own. One of the best uses of such a hotspot is keeping an eye on other teams’ scores as your favourite players battle it out on the field or pitch. For example, if the place of your football team in the league tables depends on it winningandanother team losing, you can keep your favourite sports-based web-page open to keep an eye on the situation. What’s more, you can catch up with what your friends and fellow fans think on Facebook or Twitter; engaging in some lively banter along the way.

Cafes

If you’re out with friends or catching up with a family member at a cafe, accessing the internet via a wireless hotspot might not be your first thought. However for those who simply want to relax by themselves, catch up with work or read through the day’s news, having wi-fi available in a cafe can be a godsend. It allows you to read through and file your work emails, or – if you’ve had enough work for the day – indulge in your guilty passion for an hour or two, be it trawling a celebrity gossip site or finding new recipes.

Supermarkets

Who wants to surf the net whilst they’re out doing the weekly food shop? Well plenty of people, actually. Think about it – you’ve picked up your favourite brand of organic tea bags whilst pushing the trolley round, but they’re double the price they were last time. Wouldn’t it be handy if you check howLine Rental - Do We Need It. Read more ... » other supermarkets price said teabags? If they’re much cheaper, you could then pick them up on the way home from another store. What’s more, you might be picking up some ingredients for a special recipe… but what if you forget how much you need? Simple – look up the recipe via your mobile or tablet. Sorted!

Hotels

Many hotels throughout the UK and the world now offer wireless connections to their patrons. Today’s ‘always-connected’ culture has basically made this a must-have for hotel guests - and a service hotels really need to offer if they are to maintain a good reputation. Not only does it mean those on business trips can stay connected, but having access to wi-fi can keep kids occupied whilst their parents enjoy the delights of room service – or keep the adults occupied whilst the kids play their games!

This is just the tip of the iceberg, though. Airports, hospitals and even government buildings are offering wireless hotspots now. Now that you know some of the most common places in which to find a hotspot, though, you’re one step ahead… now, get connecting!

I follow many London-based Arsenal FC fans on my Twitter, and god bless these folks for sending out live match updates via Twitter tweets for people like us who cannot see the games live (or at times, even on the telly)! Definitely one of the best ways to put Wifi to use!

I used to use this awesome little app on my jailbroken iPhone called WiFiFoFum – basically what it does is scan for wifi hotspots in your vicinity and show them on a large map (Google Maps map). So no matter where you were, you’d be able to see all hotspots around you. Its available on the Android OS as well if I’m not mistaken.

Wow! The places that you have mentioned and the logic that you have given behind it is realistic and so many problems could just be solved if only we could locate the hotspot in these areas.

These hotspots are great revolutionary inventions and helping people to be in touch when on the go. Its cool to be connected no matter where you are but the locations of these hotspots should be disclosed and not kept secret.

Great post – I am driving around sometimes wishing I had wifi and never thought about a few of these places. Now that I have an iPhone 4s I don’t have to worry about it because of the hotspot, but it drains the battery so fast. This is great to know, thanks for the quality info!

I find most of the WiFi hotspots in Hotels and Restaurants but they are damn slow. There are very less to no open WiFi hotspots near my neighborhood.
